Washrooms on 9 floors of the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool are undergoing a major upgrade with the Rada Sense digital water control system specified to control the water supplies to all of the wash hand basins.

In what is the UK's largest Rada Sense installation to date, some 111 individual Rada Sense controllers will be installed and in addition to providing an aesthetically pleasing look to the washrooms, the Rada Sense also provides a range of advantages to the building's facility management team.

Rada Sense units control both the water on/off operation at each basin as well as the water temperature control.

Rada Sense - which fully complies with TMV3 safe temperature criteria - brings a whole new look to washrooms with its chrome plated no-touch control panel supported by a range of high quality fittings.

Entirely UK designed, Rada Sense also offers a unique combination of safety, hygiene and absolute thermal control and features an inbuilt thermal disinfection cycle to ensure that risks of infection and contamination from water borne bacteria are minimised. There is also an automatic duty flush function, the frequency of which can be increased or reduced to suit individual site requirements.

The Royal Liver Building on the Pier Head is arguably Liverpool's most famous landmark building.

Both of these features are particularly relevant in the Royal Liver Building environment where, in order to maintain best practice in the water supply system, it has previously been necessary to manually flush the taps in order to deter potential legionella and bacteria problems developing within the hot water system dead legs. This was both time consuming and labour intensive.

With its easy-to-use programming capabilities, Rada Sense now performs automatic duty flushing on basins that have not been used every 168 hours (7 days) in order to clear the deadlegs and traps. This is the preferred flushing cycle of the Royal Liver Building management - the cycle is in fact infinitely variable to suit a particular establishment.

The disinfection cycle, where water at 60°C is flushed through the system in a safe environment, is activated electronically via the control panel using a hand held pda computer.

There are a number of other pre-programmed safety and cost saving features in use in the Royal Liver Building. With Rada Sense the user can alter the water temperature as well as the timed flow. In order to prevent scalding, in the Royal Liver Building there is a pre-programmed safe upper limit on the water delivery temperature. Every wash hand basin has also been programmed to deliver water flow for a limited period, resulting in a major cost saving opportunity in such a large installation.

The Royal Liver Building is arguably the most famous building in Liverpool. Since its completion in 1911 it has overlooked the River Mersey from its water front location on the Pier Head. Designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas it is one of the earliest examples of multi-storey reinforced concrete construction, a fact reflected in its Grade 1 listed building status.

Its architectural masterpiece is the pair of clock towers from which passengers and crews of passing ships could tell the time en route along the river. It is a little known fact that the clock faces are larger than those on Big Ben and are in fact the largest clock dials in the UK.
